The City
of Buena Park Recreation, Parks & Community Services Department offers
a wide variety of recreation, sports and cultural activities, programs,
services and events for all age groups. It is responsible for maintaining
and developing all public parks & facilities as well as the Walter D.
Ehlers Community Recreation Center, the Department's Administrative Offices,
as well as providing graffiti removal services to the entire community.
In addition,
the Department provides residents with current community information through
the production of the award-winning Buena
Park Today Community Newsletter, community-oriented cable television
productions for the City's Government Access cable channel BPTV
3 and the maintenance of the City's Web site.

The City's
Parks Division maintains eleven park sites, four clubhouses, three pools,
the Walter D.
Ehlers Community Recreation Center PDF (64k) and provides graffiti
removal services to the entire community. It is also responsible for
the ground maintenance of the Buena
Park Library District and the Whitaker-Jaynes Historical Estate.
The division
maintains the landscaping contract for the City's many street medians
and coordinates the fields and facility usage by youth and adult sports
organizations.

Mission
Statement:
The Department of Parks & Recreation Graffiti Removal Program will
provide a simple and complete program to eradicate graffiti within the
City using all available resources and reasonable efforts.
Goals
and Objectives:
The goals and objectives of the program are to make the best community
possible by eliminating the visual blight of graffiti and to provide
immediate and lasting solutions.
The
City's Services are:
- Provide
the residents of the community with a complete and citywide anti-graffiti
program. Accept zero tolerance toward graffiti and the graffiti offender.
- Provide
a 24-hour graffiti hotline for quick reporting and responding purposes
so that everyone can call the graffiti hotline anytime and leave the
address of the vandalism.
- Remove
graffiti from the first floor of any structure, which faces the street.
Remove graffiti as quickly as possible except for rainy days and holidays.
- Encourage
all commercial and apartment complex owners to remove graffiti from
their property as soon as possible.
- Provide
donated or recycled paint as it becomes available to all residents as
needed to remove graffiti on private property.
- Track
and keep graffiti removal records daily and report these activities
to the City Council.

Youth Sports

The philosophy of the City's Youth Sports program is that all children learn to play in a fun and safe environment. All children must play at least half of the game and scores are not emphasized. This is a great program for your children to learn basic skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Leagues are coached by parent volunteers. Clinics coached by Recreation Staff are available for children who are too young to participate in league play.
Registration is held in person at the Walter D. Ehlers Community Recreation Center 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through alternating Fridays. No mail-in registration will be accepted. Most sports require a form of age verification to be shown at the time of registration. Call (714) 236-3860 for exact dates of registration.

Coed leagues are offered on Mon. & Fri.
Men's Leagues are offered on Tues. & Thu.
Coed Leagues are required to have four women on the field. Each team can have a maximum of 16 players. Roster changes can be made up to the 3rd game of the season.
League fees are $350 for the 10-week seasons and $200 for the Mini five-week season. Games are generally played at Boisseranc Park. Game times are 6:45 pm, 8:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. on weekdays. Teams must pay $8 to each umpire before each game.

RECREATION SWIMMING
Open swim is offered at Peak & Boisseranc pools.
Fees: Children = $1 MMM Adults = $1.50
Sessions offered daily from 12:30-2:15 p.m. and 2:45-4:30 p.m. Evening Swim is 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Peak Pool only.
Children under the age of six years must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Floatation devices are not allowed.
Large Child Care groups are welcomed but must make arrangements by calling the Recreation Department for pre-approval.
SWIM INSTRUCTION
Classes meet nine (9) days for 30 minutes each class. The first week of classes meet Mon.-Fri. and the second week Mon.-Thu.
There are a variety of classes offered:
- Parent and Me (3 years and under)
- Beginner and Advanced Tiny Tots for ages 4 & 5 years
- Beginner and Advanced for ages 16 years and under (turtles, tadpoles, barracudas, dolphins, and seals)
- Beginner Adult classes.
Morning sessions are at 9:40, 10:15, 10:50, and 11:25 a.m. Afternoon sessions are at 4:45, 5:20, 5:55, 6:30 p.m. All class fees are $30 except Tiny Tots ($35) due to smaller student/instructor ratio.
Registration is taken on a first come, first served basis starting one week in advance until classes are filled.
Register at Peak Park Pool during Recreation Swim times. Session 1 registration held on prior two weekends before pool opens. There are five two-week swim sessions available during the summer. Classes start the day after Fathers day, registration starts the weekend prior.
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS
Adults and children can benefit from individualized instruction (1 to 3 children per class and with one parent option allowed.) Instructor can work with a parent in teaching their own child basic skills for water safety.
Classes are 30 minutes each and must be taken over a two week period. ($125 for 9 classes).
Lifeguard In Training (L.I.T.) Program
Teens interesting in becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor will learn Water Safety, basic First Aid skills and teaching techniques. Some graduates will be chosen to volunteer throughout the summer and serve as teaching aides or deck walkers.
Class follows same schedule as swim lessons.
($30 for 9 classes)
BRENNER PARK TINY TOT WADING POOL

Open to parents with children 6 years and under. Pool is 25 feet long and 1-2 feet deep.
Admission is FREE!

LARWIN SPRAY POOL

An area with a large water sprayer in the middle allows small children to cool off and play in a puddle of water.

SUMMER PARKS
AND PLAYGROUNDS PDF (782k)
The parks and playground program begins in mid-June until mid-August (see flyer for exact dates). Recreation Staff at parks plan free programs that include sports, games, caroms, billiards, crafts etc. for children 6 - 12 years of age. Clubhouses are open Mon.-Fri. from 12-4 p.m. during the eight week summer program.
Three special “ Park Happenings” events are held at high noon at Peak Park. Check the schedule for details.
SPECIAL “PARK HAPPENINGS”!
All park programs and clubhouses are closed on these FREE special “Park Happening” days held at 12 noon at Peak Park. Children, Parents, Day care groups are all invited to Peak Park for these summer events! Large groups need to call the Recreation Office (714) 236-3860 for pre-arrangements.
"PICASSO'S IN THE PARK" - July 7, 2005
Held at Peak Park – everything goes this day. Kids will create several huge art projects using crafts materials, paint, chalk, boxes, paper, tape etc. The park itself will become our canvas.
"WACK-O-LYMPICS" - July 14, 2005
Held at Peak Park this very popular event keeps kids so busy laughing that they can barely finish the races. Try wheelbarrow races, marshmallow whisteling, crazy relays, and much more! FREE!
"THE GREAT SPLASH" - August 11, 2005
Held at Peak Park. Not a dry child will be left standing at the rip-roaring -wild-water-wars event. Slip'n'slides, water balloons, wet tug-o-wars, the works - expect to get very, very wet! FREE!
BEACH PARTY BLOWOUT - Aug. 4, 2005
This bus trip will cost only $1.00 for each child and $2.00 for any parent who wants come and build sand castles. Children under 7 years must be accompanied by an adult. Pack up a lunch, plenty of suntan lotion and let's play. Beach location changes from year to year. Pre-registration is a must. (714) 236-3860.

The
Buena Park Youth
Theatre provides fourth through twelfth grade students the opportunity
to participate in performing two major stage musicals each year. BPYT
is a family venture since parents are strongly encouraged to assist
in supporting the productions. Additionally, the program is well supported
by a nonprofit adjunct parent volunteer group, the Friends of the Buena
Park Youth Theatre, for both production and fundraising. Details and

education and enrichment for school-aged children, the Youth
Cultural Program of special performances or visits to cultural
programs is arranged for the students in the City's two major school

Buena Park

public performances allow residents to see major show performances at

The
Student Art Show & Reception is
a springtime tradition, which recognizes the talents of local elementary
students with a competition in visual arts media. Winners, their families
and teachers are invited to a reception hosted by the Fine
Arts Commission and attended by City Council members. Student artwork
is displayed in the Council Chambers for the month.
Highlighting
the talents of a visual artist, the Visiting
Artist Exhibition and Reception is held in June
to recognize and display the works of a Fine Arts Commission chosen
artist. A reception is held in honor of the artist, whose works are
displayed in the Council Chambers, and is attended by City Council members.
The Buena
Park Community Chorus presents the best in mixed choral music
performing in Orange County, fundraising and presenting two major concerts

Outdoor Summer

Recognizing
exceptional service to the arts, the Fine Arts Commission has established
the Elva Leisch Hughes Laureate of the Arts
Award given annually to an individual, group or business
nominated by the Fine Arts Commission. In addition, the Commission bestows
Partners of Distinction Awards and Letters of Recognition
to those individuals or community vendors that have achieved a high
level of arts support to Buena Park.

The Buena
Park Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening
hours vary. The mission of the Buena Park Senior Center is to provide
the mature adult population in the community with a diverse offering
of recreational, educational, social and human service programs in environments
which promote a spirit of dignity and limitless potential for later
life enrichment. Our goals are to enhance quality of life, nurture talents
and skills, foster social interaction, and support independence and
self-determination. The Senior Center newsletter, "The Key",

BINGO
Games are held Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 3pm The cost
is $.25 per card with grocery items for prizes.
DANCE
“Swing Into The Night” For some of the best “Big Band” music around
each Saturday evening from 7 - 10pm at the Senior Center. A $4.00 admission
charge entitles you to dance to music, enjoy refreshments and even be
eligible for door prizes.
GIFT
SHOP
The "Senior Sampler" Gift Shop is open year round, Monday
through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome to purchase

OUTREACH
An Outreach Worker will acquaint you with the many services at the Senior
Center and connect you with county wide programs. Call for an appointment.
MEALS
ON WHEELS
Meals on Wheels of Buena Park will deliver meals to your home Monday
through Friday for a nominal fee if you are homebound and unable to
prepare your own meals. Volunteer drivers are always needed for this
program.
MEDICAL
TRANSPORTATION
If you are need of transportation to medical appointments, call (714)
236-3874 for registration and information. Must be over 55 and a Buena
Park resident. One dollar fee each way.
SENIOR
DAY CARE PROGRAM
The Senior Day Care is designed for frail seniors over 60 years of age
who are in need of supervision and care during the day while their caregiver(s)
work or take time for themselves. The program is offered 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., Monday through Friday. The fee is a $15 donation per day. Call
(714) 826-3163 for more information.
SHUFFLEBOARD
Five shuffleboard courts are available for play at the Senior Center.
The Shuffleboard Club enjoys competition with other senior centers,
mobile home parks, etc. League play is on Tuesdays 9am - 11:30am with
practice on Thursdays 9am to 11:30am. New members are always welcome.
T.L.C.
(Nutrition Program)
The T.L.C. Nutrition Program is more than just a meal. It gives seniors
the opportunity to enjoy a hot, well-balanced, nutritious meal in the
company of other seniors. Stop by any morning, Monday through Friday
and enjoy an interesting speaker, entertainment, or maybe a special
party. Lunch is served at 11:45am for a $2.50 donation. For more information

TRAVEL
A wide variety of travel opportunities are available with the "Happy
Wanderers." Trips range from day trips to longer excursions. Sign-up
on Tuesday mornings at the Senior Center. Call (714) 236-3870 for additional
information.

The Buena Park Senior Center has a strong and vital volunteer program.
Application and Job Descriptions available at the front desk. Interested
and qualified volunteers may register with the R.S.V.P. program of the
Volunteer Center of Greater Orange County.

regularly scheduled programming, BPTV 3 airs a Community Bulletin
Board listing of upcoming City activities, events, programs and announcements.If you

Council Meetings
Watch your City
Council at work! Gavel-to-gavel coverage of City Council Meetings
is aired live and replayed each month to keep residents informed of
the various decisions being made towards improving their City. Adelphia
Cable subscribers can watch Council Meetings live
on the second and fourth Tuesdays
of the month (except holidays) and replays all other Tuesdays at 5:00
p.m. on Channel 3.

Park Cable Productions
Award-winning Buena Park Cable Productions is dedicated to providing
programs to educate, enlighten and entertain the public. Coverage of
community events makes up some of the most popular City programming
among viewers. Relive the fun and excitement, and catch a glimpse of
the many participants at various City events during the montly "Mayor's
Show."
Finally,
BPTV Cable Productions presents the award-winning "CRIME
WATCH" series, a talk show format program which features interviews
with the Buena Park Police Department's Public Information Officer,
Sergeant Gary Worrall and program host Jane Cameron. The show includes
some on-the-spot footage of Police Officers in action as well as crime
prevention tips and a look at Buena Park's Most Wanted segment to help
protect you and your family each month.

Arts Showcase
Enjoy video samplings of animation, architectural art, ballet, chamber
and choral music, dance, folk art, museum art, musical theatre, opera,
orchestral, recital and theatrical performances as well as classic film

Community Gardens
No room to grow your own fruits and vegetables at home? Rent a plot at the Community Gardens, Thelma Drive and Knott Avenue. Buena Park residents may rent a large plot (30' x 20') for annual fee of $60, medium plot (20' x 20') for $45 or a small plot (15' x 20') for $30. Annual registration begins in September.
