The Buena Park Public Works Department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance programs for City streets, utilities, buildings, and equipment. We also manage the City's engineering, transportation and Capital Improvement Programs (CIP). There are 70+ employees with an operating budget of over $13 million, and we consist of the following divisions:

Administration
This division is responsible for the overall management of all public works activities and operations as well as coordinating with other public agencies including Caltrans, Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Orange County Water District (OCWD), and the California Regional Water Quality Board.

Engineering Services
This division is responsible for the design and management of all City funded construction projects. This would include the installation of new sewer and water lines, public buildings, major street repairs, and construction site inspections. It also maintains records and maps for City facilities and provides technical support to other City departments.

Traffic Services 
This division is responsible for the installation, timing and maintenance of all traffic control devices and signals. It also conducts engineering studies of traffic conditions and works with the Police Department and other agencies to improve traffic conditions in the City.

Equipment Maintenance 
This division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all city-owned vehicles and equipment. This includes everything from police cars to cement mixers.

Facilities Maintenance 
This division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of approximately 55 city-owned buildings and facilities.

Street Maintenance 
This division maintains all City streets and public alleys, repairs curbs and sidewalks, and trims all trees located adjacent to city streets and traffic medians. They maintain approximately 175 miles of streets and 350 miles of curbs and sidewalks.

Utility Maintenance 
This division maintains and repairs the city's 260 miles of water and sewer lines.This includes water valves, over 20,000 water meters, eight water wells, and a 20 million gallon underground reservoir.

Right of Way Permits
The Public Works Department is responsible for inspecting all work done within the public Right of Way (ROW). Anyone who has questions about permit fees or how to obtain a permit should contact the Engineering Services Division at (714) 562-3670 for information about applicable fees and procedures. Some of the things that permits are needed for include:

  • Widening or replacing your driveway approach
  • Having a dumpster placed in front of your property
  • Landscaping work between the sidewalk and curb
  • Closing streets for block parties
  • Repairing your sewer connection to a city main
