Post Date:10/08/2020 11:56 AM

Buena Park, Calif. – On October 15, 2020, City of Buena Park employees will join over 440,000 Orange County residents participating in the thirteenth annual Great California ShakeOut. The drill, which will occur at 10:15 a.m., involves employees at five City-owned facilities practicing how they will protect themselves during a major earthquake.

Buena Park’s participation in the Great ShakeOut is part of the City’s continued emphasis on emergency preparedness and response, which includes employing an emergency services coordinator, plan creation and revision, and disaster preparedness and response training for City employees.

Members of the public conducting business at City Hall, the Public Works City Yard, or the Buena Park Police Department may see City employees using the “Duck, Cover, and Hold On” procedure during the drill, which is expected to last approximately one minute.

ShakeOut began as a Southern California drill in 2008 and has since grown to include drills in more than 40 states and U.S. territories, along with participation in Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, and many other countries. More than 18 million participants are expected to participate in 2020 (including almost 5.5 million in California) as part of the various ShakeOut drills.

The Southern California Earthquake Center coordinates the Great ShakeOut earthquake drills worldwide along with a broad network of local ShakeOut coordinators, with support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Science Foundation, and U.S. Geological Survey. The Great California ShakeOut is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance, which includes California Office of Emergency Services, U.S. Geological Survey, California Earthquake Authority, American Red Cross, and many other organizations.

Buena Park residents are encouraged to take part at home, at work or in school following the recommendations available on the Great ShakeOut website (www.shakeout.org).
